Ness Notes (August 7)

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Larry_Ness]Larry Ness Were you ready for some football? I’m not sure I was. The Eagles’ Donovan McNabb completed all three of his passes (29 yards) while leading Philadelphia on a 61-yard scoring drive on the team’s first possession (and McNabb’s only one) of the game. After that, the only score by the Eagles came on a Hall of Fame game record 55-yard field goal by David Akers. My free play for Monday is on the Cin Reds over the StL Cards at 7:10 ET. Coming off a 3-1 MLB weekend, I’m opening the new week with a Technical Insider (backed by two winning trends of 73%) plus a 15* ALCS Rematch on the Angels/White Sox on ESPN. The entire backup crew contributed, as QBs Garcia and Chang each threw an interception, with Detmer losing a fumble. RB Bruce Perry lost two fumbles, giving Philly five turnovers for the game. The Raiders were slightly better, losing just two turnovers plus botching the snap on a short field goal attempt. Speaking of FGs, Janikowski kicked two long ones for the Raiders, from 50 and 51 yards. Oh yeah, the final was Oakland 16-10 over Philadelphia. USA Today released hits preseason coaches’ poll last Friday and Ohio State will open the 2006 season as the nation’s No. 1 team. However, unlike last year when USC claimed all but two of the first-place votes, the top-six teams all received at least one first-place vote, the most since 2001 when nine schools garnered at least one vote . Ohio State got 28 No. 1 votes and defending champ Texas will open as the nation’s No. 2 team, with 11 first place votes. Notre Dame (nine votes) and USC (one) finished in a tie for third and Oklahoma finished fifth. The Sooners actually received the second-most first-place votes (13) of any team but of course the poll was taken prior to the suspension of the team’s starting QB, Rhett Bomar. Of interest is the wide discrepancy in opinion on the Sooners this year, as they got votes from No. 1 to as low as No. 22! Auburn, which opens No. 6, was the only other school to receive a nod at the top spot. The SEC claimed the most teams in the top-25 with six while the ACC, Big-10 and Big-12 all claimed four spots. The Pac-10 had three, the Big East two, the MWC had one (TCU) and of course No. 3 Notre Dame plays by its own rules (one could consider the Irish an independent or a member of Conference-NBC!). By the way, the last time ND was ranked this high in the preseason was 1992 (opened unranked last year). No. 23 Tennessee, which finished last year at 5-6, is the only team to be ranked which had a losing record in 2005. No. 15 Michigan and No. 17 Iowa both finished 7-5 last year and join the Vols as the only schools in this year’s preseason poll to not have been ranked in the final coaches’ poll of 2005. Teams which finished last year in the final top-25 but were not among this year’s first poll include UCLA (finished No. 13 last year), Wisconsin (15) and Boston College (17). MLB notes Go figure the Dodgers! They opened MLB’s second half by losing 13 of 14 games after the break. During that run, they were outscored 81-29 with a team batting average of .222 and a team ERA of 5.41. So who’s MLB’s hottest team as the new week begins? The Dodgers, naturally. They’ve rebounded to win nine consecutive games as Monday’s play begins, outscoring their opponents by 65-23 while hitting .310 and posting a team ERA of 2.55! Elias reports that the Dodgers have now won nine consecutive games, a streak that began after they lost eight straight. They are the sixth team in major-league history to lose at least eight straight games and follow that immediately with a winning streak of at least eight games. The others: the 1931 Cubs, 1949 Red Sox, 1965 Pirates, 1985 Twins and 2001 Cubs. The Dodgers’ starting pitcher has earned a victory in each of the team’s last six games and all six of those games have been on the road. In the last 10 years, only one major-league team has had a longer streak of that type. Seattle won eight straight games — all on the road — with a starting pitcher getting the victory each time in 2003. The Cardinals took a seven-game losing streak into the weekend’s action but after losing to the Brewers 4-3 on Friday, won both Saturday and Sunday. The team’s eight-game losing streak was its second eight-game losing streak of the season and that hadn’t happened since 1983! The Blue Jays ended their seven-game losing streak by beating the White Sox on Sunday, 7-3. Of note in that game was the losing pitcher, Jose Contreras. It’s Contreras’ fourth loss since July 14, the day his 17-game winning streak ended, tying for the most losses for any pitcher in the majors over that period. MLB’s longest active losing streak, now that St Louis and Toronto have won, currently belongs to the Royals (four games). I guess that’s fitting, as KC also owns MLB’s worst overall record, at 38-73. Monday’s MLB schedule features a relatively light nine-game card, including the Angels and White Sox making up a rain out from May 11 at 7:05 ET tonight in Chicago on ESPN. Of course these teams met in last year’s ALCS with the White Sox winning four straight games (all complete games) after the Angels opened with a 3-2 win in Game 1. It’s hard to believe they’ll be a complete game tonight, by either starting pitcher. The Angels send Kelvim Escobar to the mound and he’s 1-9 with a 6.21 career ERA vs the White Sox in 18 appearances. That includes an 0-7 mark in nine starts, with a 5.64 ERA. As for Chicago’s Mark Buehrle, the one-time ace of the staff is 0-5 with a 9.92 ERA in his last six outings! Speaking of rematches, the Twins open a three-game series tonight in Detroit vs the Tigers. Detroit was able to take two of three in Minnesota from July 28-July 30 and have now won nine of the 12 meetings this year between the two teams. Tonight’s pitching matchup features two rookies, the Twins’ Francisco Liriano (12-2, 1.96) and the Tigers’ Zack Miner (6-2, 4.03). These guys hooked up back on July 28, in a game the Tigers won 3-2 (10 innings). Liriano allowed just three hits and two runs in that game over eight innings (12 Ks), while Miner allowed four hits and two runs in six innings. Liriano has not pitched since (left forearm?) and it will be interesting how he does. As for Miner, the Tigers are 8-3 in his 11 starts this year but his last win came back on July 16 and over his last four starts he’s got an ERA of 7.36. Core Values For Business Advantage

By Darcie Davis Clarifying and implementing corporate core values corporate DNA will result in a business advantage. Two questions every company should ask: 1. Why did each employee select our company and why do they stay? 2. Why did each customer select us and why do they let us continue to serve them? Those are easy to answer if your company’s core values or corporate DNA are clearly defined and communicated. Core values should be created to highlight or market the company’s true personality. Core values are not words or statements made up by creative teams or marketing consultants. Core values are the existing principles that drive behavior within the company. And they don’t change over time but continue on as guideposts for company growth. For instance, many companies describe themselves using the word quality. But what does quality mean? And how does an employee get or give more of it? It is not a value word that can drive behavior. Core values must be specific about the behavior that’s expected from employees. Here is an example of core values developed by two different companies. The value statements fit each company perfectly. COMPANY ABC: We offer diverse backgrounds of experience We openly communicate with respect We thrive in a quick and agile learning environment We are focused on strategic change by linking research to solutions We are ambitious, proactive and persevering about growth COMPANY XYZ: We operate through teamwork As individuals, we are community role models We are resourceful We know how to translate various points of view We offer an enjoyable experience Each company’s core values frame the kind of individual who would best thrive at the company. Recruiting directors at each company should use these value statements to make sure that new hires understand AND FIT these values. These are statements that must drive behavior and can be supported or discussed during employee performance reviews. As Jim Collins says in his book Good to Great, make sure the right people are on the bus. The company value statements should describe the bus and all the seats that are needed to offer a competitive business advantage. The New Medicine of Dr.Ryke Geerd Hamer

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Alister_Bredee] Alister Bredee Dr.Ryke Geerd Hamer, one time chief internist of the Cancer Clinic of Munich University Hospital met horrific tragedy when in 1978, his 19 year old son Dirk, was shot dead in front of his eyes! Shortly afterwards he developed testicular cancer and wondered why! His exploration brought him to a dramatic conclusion that he called The Iron Rule of Cancer! The Iron Rule states that a sudden and unforeseen incident of a highly charged emotional nature leads to cancer. He continues by saying that the cancer can be cured once the emotional conflict is resolved. If it is not changed the patient will die! This he suggests is why so many conventional treatments are unsuccessful. The same phenomenon occurs in the animal world. A sheep looses its lamb to a predator and goes on to develop teat cancer. The cancer disappears when the ewe falls pregnant once again. The sudden shock or Significant Emotional Event (SEE) leads to what Hamer calls aDirk-Hamer-Syndrome or DHS, which swiftly produces a cancerous growth or equivalent in a bodily organ. Hamer was able to trace this development by using CT scans. With the help of Computerized Tomography, Dr. Hamer was able to produce a chart that relates specific emotional traumas with the formation of lesions in the brain that result in cancerous tumors growing in predictable parts of the body. Taking breast cancer as an example, the doctor attributes the emotional cause to a separation issue in the patients life. In the case of left-handed woman who develops cancer as a result of a mother-daughter conflict there is likely to be a tumor on the right breast. With right-handed women this would reverse. The manufacturers of the CT equipment, Siemens, testify that Geerd Hamer used over 6,000 CT scans in his work in developing this extraordinary theory. What he appears to be saying is that the cancer is a symptom of the real illness, which lies painfully embedded in the psyche and in the brain. He appears to have thoroughly researched his explanation to boot! Hamer criticizes the orthodox medical treatment of cancer by saying that 98% of patients die from the treatment and not the disease. He claims: Nowadays most people with cancer die from the affects of the medical diagnosis and prognosis. It is the diagnosis and prognosis which produces the supposed metastases. He maintains there is no such thing as cancer spreading as conventionally supposed. Instead the metastasis is the growth of another cancer caused by yet another Significant Emotional Event. In this case the shock of the medical diagnosis and the physicians negative prognosis for the future development of the disease. Dr Hamer does not offer solutions how these conflicts are to be resolved, but stresses resolution has to be gentle. Rough analytical abreactive therapies are to be discouraged because they might trigger another cancer causing Significant Emotional Event. However, many gentle therapies such as EFT abound today; they might just play a big part in resolving these cancer producing conflicts in what must be a milestone in Mind-Body Medicine. A Fragile Lifeline: Lessons I Learned Answering The Aids Hotline

By Glenn Plaskin Dial 1-800/AIDSNYC Every Monday and Wednesday morning, promptly at 10 a.m., I leave behind my daily life and turn to volunteering as an AIDS Hotline counselor at New York Citys GMHC [Gay Mens Health Crisis], the nations largest social service agency for AIDS. For the next four hours, my co-volunteers and I sit in front of a bank of constantly-ringing telephones, talking to men, women, and teens who call in from across the nation with urgent questions about AIDS, the ravaging disease that has left 13.9 million people dead worldwide. After almost 20 years, a whole generation, families are still facing the heartache of tending the sick, while scientists continue to be confounded by this stubborn, ravaging virus. Although the federal government currently spends$4 billion per year on AIDS research, and $15 billion worldwide, there is no cure in sight for the viral infection and no vaccine available. Small wonder that the GMHC AIDS Hotline, the nations first, is flooded with more than 40,000 calls each year. Listening to callers 8 hours each week, I often think the Hotline is actually a direct link to the soul of callers–an anonymous forum that allows each to reveal secrets and fears that they might otherwise never discuss with anyone. A Morning in May This is the way it began: Good morning, GMHC AIDS Hotline, can I help you? Yes…I have a question…[hesitantly] My son…hes 21…and he just found out…hes HIV-positive [voice breaking] Im…..alone, divorced. And I need some help…someone to talk to… Of course….happy to talk to you…it sounds like this has been devastating for you…. Its terrible. He told me two nights ago….hes…hes so young….I dont want him to die. Hes my only child….why did this have to happen? [crying] Her son, she explains, had sometimes neglected using condoms, convinced he wouldnt contract HIV infection from his female partners. How could he be so stupid? she now asks angrily. Why didnt he know how to protect himself? I dont understand. What am I going to do? We talk for 35 minutes, and by the end of the conversation, I notice Im barely breathing. The distraught womans anguish is palpable. Her situation is every mothers worst nightmare. The life of her child is in jeopardy and she feels helpless and afraid. I cant imagine anything worse. During the call, I do my best to employ the GMHC Hotline protocol of active listening, which involves using silence, empathy and gentle probing with open-ended questions. Im also having my own emotional reaction to the panic in her voice, and Im worried about whether Im doing enough. Toward the end of the clal, when she exclaims: I dont want my baby to die, my heart plummets: I know….I understand that, but there is hope, I tell her. I find myself on the verge of tears. The Bad News This mothers story is too common. According to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga., 40,000 Americans (half of them under 25) are newly infected with the AIDS virus each year. Unprotected sex and intravenous drug use remain the principal modes of transmission. Teenagers, notes AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor, are being very hard hit. She refers to the three million adolescents who contract a sexually-transmitted disease annually. Heterosexual teenage football players who are healthy and drink milk can get it too! says the 71-year-old actress, who has singlehandedly raised $150 million for AIDS research. But teens are very ignorant and feel invincible. They believe theres an invisible shield protecting them from the virus, when its actually aimed right at them. Taylor believes in addressing the problem head-on: Tell your teenage son: Maybe a condom doesnt feel as good, but if it saves your life, its better than being six feet under. Intelligence must replace random sex. Although a new generation of AIDS-fighting medications is prolonging the lives of thousands, nearly half of the 900,000 people infected with HIV in the U.S. cannot afford these drugs. Since the virus was discovered in l981, 410,800 Americans have died from AIDS-related complications, and the disease has left 13.9 million dead worldwide. Who Calls a Hotline? Not long ago I took a call from a 15-year-old boy living in a small town who said he feels guilty about his sexual attraction to other boys and is scared to discuss this with his parents. I ask him if theres a school counselor or relative he might talk to, but he says hes too afraid to confide in anyone. Being a teenager is hard enough, I thought, without the pressure of keeping this kind of secret. I felt angry and saddened that this child cant comfortably discuss his feelings with his own parents. I encourage him to call the Gay Community Center Youth Program in a nearby city. In the meantime, I assured him that he could call our Hotline anytime, that wed be there for him. This call was typical of the many we get from teenagers, whispering from their parents homes, confiding their blossoming sexual feelings and concerns. Our Hotline also receives calls from married men who phone from their offices, worried about extramarital sexual encounters; gay men suffering side effects from medications; mothers caring for a sick child or grieving for one lost to AIDS; even health care professionals themselves confused and requiring burnout support. One particular morning, Im struck by the number of single women who turn to our hotline for help. At 10:15 a.m. a distraught young woman calls, explaining that she had been dating someone very charismatic, after a two- year period of sexual abstinence. At first we used condoms and I was taking the pill to avoid pregnancy, she says. But after her partner assured her he was HIV-negative, the couple began having unprotected sex. A few months into the relationship, she recounts, his behavior became unpredictable, until he finally admitted he was sleeping with other women and was addicted to heroin. Now she has to withstand the terror of waiting 3 months before getting an HIV antibody test. To help her cope, I give her the names of three terapists in her area. The call lasts 43 minutes. At 11:15 a.m. I take a call from a woman who is breathing heavily. She says that four months earlier shed had a brief affair with a limousine driver, not out of passion, but because I felt lonely. This was so totally unlike me, she continues. I come from a traditional Orthodox Jewish family… Although they used condoms, and she has since tested negative for HIV, she feels deeply ashamed, and has stopped seeing him. And because she has both a persistent vaginal yeast infection and a rash on her neck, shes convinced she must be infected by HIV. Although rashes, high fever, swollen lymph glands, heavy night sweats, sore throat, or other flu-like symptoms may indicate HIV, they can just as easily accompany the common cold or flu, or other type of infection. I encourage her to seek medical help and counseling, but the calls ends on a down note. I must have it [AIDS], she moans. Im exasperated because it doesnt sound that way to me, yet I cant get through to her. The call lasts 22 minutes. Its 11.38 a.m. when a well-spoken woman, who says shes an attorney, calls from her office, asking for the names of anonymous testing sites. At first very businesslike, she calmly takes down all the information. I ask her why shes considering a test. Total silence. Then she begins to cry: I….I cant talk….Im sorry…you see, I have swollen lymph glands….[crying]….And my doctor wants to rule out HIV…I feel overwhelmed… Then, abruptly: Where can I send a donation? She thanks me and hurries off the phone after just 3 minutes. These were one-time callers, but, as in any epidemic, an element of panic prevails, and our hotline also attracts an army of chronic or repeat callers who are intensely fearful no matter how benign their risk, many revealing continued misconceptions and paranoia about a disease that can be effectively prevented. We do our best to help them, but often theyre impervious to counseling. Most poignant are calls we get from AIDS patients, phoning from their hospital beds, attempting to navigate the exhausting labyrinth of insurance and health care matters. One man, in hospice care, said he craved companionship and missed the good old days when he was handsome and healthy. That call was a tough one for me as just the day before a close friend of mine, Joe, who had battled HIV for 16 years, had finally succumbed. Although at the end Joe was a mere skeleton, he was nonetheless at peace. Ive done what I wanted to, he told me on our last visit. An avid gardener, he insisted on a final trip to his country house to see his garden one last time. For a moment the callers reality and the memory of my deceased friend blurred in my mind and I was overcome. Time for a break. Face to Face One of the most and unique services GMHC offers is called A-Team Counseling, a one-time, in-person session thats free and anonymous. Recently, I was on an A-Team counselling a 26-year-old HIV-infected mother from the Midwest. She had traveled to Manhattan by bus to find her estranged boyfriend, who, she recounted tearfully, had kidnapped her 7-year- old son. Disheveled, painfully thin, the woman was a disturbing sight. Shes learned that the two had already returned home where the boyfriend was, and the child put in his grandmothers custory. custody of his grandmother. Meanwhile shed run out of money for the return trip, been refused a loan by her family, lost her ID, gone hungry and spent two nights on the street. Fortunately, this woman was registered at a local AIDS organization in her town. I telephoned her caseworker and persuaded him to buy her a one-way Greyhound bus ticket for $115.00. I also gave her subway tokens, a basket of food, juice and coffee. Smiling shyly, she thanked me for caring. Shaking hands good-bye with this woman was a bittersweet farewell. What will happen to her? I wondered will her health deteriorate or improve? Will she gain control of her life and be able to provide for her son? Ill never know. One thing I do know: Shed appeared with the sorrow of a difficult life in her eyes, but when she left, she was elated at the thought of being reunited with her child. It seems that with faith and a helping hand, almost anything is possible. * * * * * 10 BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT AIDS AND HIV (This list would probably be most effective when presented in a vertical chart, the misconception on the left, the correct answer on the right.) 1)The AIDS virus can be transmitted through saliva, sweat, tears, urine or feces; also through deep kissing. 1) HIV can ONLY be transmitted through four bodily fluids: blood, semen, vaginal secretions and breast milk–and can also be transmitted from a mother to her child before birth, during birth, or while breast feeding. The exchange of saliva through kissing is no-risk, unless the saliva has blood in it and both you and your partner are bleeding in the mouth simultaneously. 2) HIV may also be transmitted through casual contact with an infected person. 2) You cant get infected from toilet seats, phones or water fountains. The virus cant be transmitted in the air through sneezing or coughing. You cant get HIV from sharing utensils or food or from touching, or hugging. HIV dies after being exposed to the air. Therefore, touching dried blood on a shaving blade, a toothbrush or a bathroom counter top is no risk. In any case, unbroken skin is impermeable, like a rubber raincoat, and cannot absorb the virus whether its alive or dead. Blood transfusions and medical procedures in the U.S. are safe. Giving blood is completely risk-free. The chance of getting HIV from dentists or other health care providers is too low even to measure. You cant get it from mosquitoes or other insect or animal bites. 3) Oral sex is just as risky as vaginal or anal intercourse. 3) Although not 100% risk-free, oral sex is considered a low-risk activity, except if: you have bleeding gums, recent dental work, open sores such as a herpes lesion, any cut, blister, or burn in the mouth, or if youve just brushed or flossed your teeth. Also, oral sex with an infected woman is riskier if she is having her period, since menstrual blood can contain HIV. Overall, latex barriers, (such as condoms or dental dams) used during oral sex reduce the transmission of not just HIV, but other sexual transmitted diseases. 4) Animal skin, latex and polyurethane condoms are all equally effective in preventing HIV infection and you can use ANY lubrication on the condom desired. 4)Only latex or polyurethane condoms may be used, as HIV can pass through an animal skin condom. With latex condoms, only water-based lubricants–like K-Y jelly or H-R jelly–may be used. No lubricants with oil, alcohol, or grease are safe.Petroleum jelly,Vaseline, Crisco, mineral oil, baby oil, massage oil, butter and most hand creams can weaken the condom and cause it to split. However, with polyurethane condoms, petroleum-based lubricants can be used. 5) Women have to rely on men using condoms during intercourse to protect themselves against HIV. 5) Women may employ the female condom, a plastic sheath that can be inserted in their vaginas and used for protection against HIV. It can be inserted up to 8 hours before sex, has rings at both ends to hold it in place and can be lubricated with oil-based lubricants that stay wet longer. In addition, women can carry conventional condoms for their male partners use. 6) If a woman is HIV-positive, her offspring will automatically be born infected with HIV. 6) With no medical treatment taken, about 25% of HIV-positive women will give birth to infants who are also infected. However, the use of anti-HIV medications has resulted in a significant decrease of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in utero and during delivery to less than 5%. (NYT 10/19/ 99]. 7) AIDS is fundamentally a gay disease contracted by white males. 7) Recent data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that young gay Hispanic and African-American men and heterosexual women are the fastest growing segment of the population being infected with HIV. Women now account for 43% of all HIV infected people over age 15. [NYT 11/24/98] African-American and Hispanic women account for more than 76% of AIDS cases among women in the U.S. 8) Heterosexual men are not really at risk for contracting HIV, even if they dont use condoms. 8) The inside opening of the penis is composed of highly-absorbent, sponge- like mucous membrane tissues, which can provide a route for HIV-infected vaginal secretions or blood to enter the bloodstream. Proper condom use protects men from infection. 9) The AIDS epidemic is largely over because new AIDS medications like protease inhibitors and others have turned AIDS into a chronic, not a terminal disease. 9) In the U.S., AIDS is the fifth leading cause of death for people 25-44 years old. Roughly half of all those infected with HIV in the U.S. are not receiving any medications or medical care. AIDS now kills more people worldwide than any other infection, including malaria and tuberculosis.[NYT 11/24/98] In 1998 alone, 2.5 million people died of AIDS worldwide. 13.9 million people have died since the virus was discovered in 1981. 10) If you think youve been exposed to HIV through unprotected sex, you can take an HIV antibody test 2 weeks later and get an accurate result. 10) The standard window or waiting period remains a full 3 months. However, because the widely-used HIV antibody tests (The ELISA and Western Blot) have become so sensitive, about 95% of people will procure an accurate result 4-6 weeks after a possible exposure to the virus. * * * * [Note:The information stated above was reviewed for medical accuracy by Dr. Todd J. Yancey, an infectious disease specialist practicing in New York City and affiliated with New York Presbyterian Hospital, NY, Cornell Campus.] THE CHILD LIFE PROGRAM Mommy takes a lot of medicine and Mommys really tired sometimes and she cant take you to the park as much as she used to. Its not that I dont love you…and that I dont want to…but Uncle Jacks going to take you to the park today. –A mother living with AIDS, a client at GMHC, talking to her 6-year- old son. In New York City alone, 28,000 children have been orphaned by AIDS since the epidemic began [NYT 12/13/98] GMHCs unique Child Life Program serves HIV-infected parents and their children–who may, or may not, be infected with the virus. We help families strengthen their ability to cope, relieve the pressure of parenting with support services, and teach parents how to talk to their kids, says Child Life Program Coordinator Alison Ferst. Unfortunately, should a parent or child be sick enough to be facing death, we also help them walk through it with grace and dignity—as opposed to feeling alone, isolated and frightened. We also encourage sick parents to make stable legal plans for their children who may be left behind, adds Ferst, and to have disclosure conversations with the children in advance, so you dont have a child standing at her mothers funeral, not sure where shes going next. When an HIV-infected Mom arrives at GMHC to have lunch, attend a support group, consult with a lawyer, or access the acupuncture clinic, she can leave her children in a spacious playroom, decorated with fanciful murals and a giant tree hand-painted by the famed childrens story writer and illustrator, Maurice Sendak, who donated his art. [see photos] The program provides: child- sitting, nutrition services, a food pantry, art and magic classes, and recreational trips–church picnics, seasonal apple-pumpkin picking, amusement parks, zoos, museums, beaches. Also: homework help sessions, holiday parties, hospital visits, summer sports and weekly support groups for HIV- positive parents and their HIV-negative children. This unique program also features: Cooking classes for kids who sometimes prepare meals for sick parents; Pediatric Buddies, GMHC adult volunteers who play with sick children and also assist with family chores; Fun With Feelings Support Group, Friday Evening Family Time, Birthday parties, and a Holiday Gift Drive. Children infected or affected by AIDS, concludes Ferst, want to be like other kids: They want to play with their friends, want to know that someone will always take care of them, want to know theyre not alone, and often wonder if its their fault when Mom or Dad gets sick. These children need a helping hand and any of us can provide one. Bestselling author GLENN PLASKIN is one of the nation’s leading psychology reporters and celebrity interviewers. My First Driving Lesson

By Morgan Hamilton It seems as though I’ve always been a little bit afraid of driving. Now please don’t misunderstand, I’m not one of those naturalist weirdos that is against technology in all its forms. On the contrary, I enjoy being driven around in the air conditioned comfort of a fine car. I have no problems with that. It’s the thought of me actually driving that scares me. So you can imagine what a nightmare my driving lesson was. Like all teenagers, I took drivers education to learn how to drive so I could get my driver’s license. After all, being able to drive was one of the cornerstones of independence and would mean that I had developed my own wings right? Well it didn’t really work out that way, as I was to find out to my utter disbelief. I never actually drove anything before in my first driving lesson was a disaster. It started out badly when I got into the drivers seat and literally froze. I have to mention at this point that the instructor allotted to me for the duration of the driving lesson wasnt exactly awe inspiring. He looked at me like I love some kind of complete moron and that wasn’t very comforting. So my first driving lesson began about as poorly as I possibly could have. I still dont know why or what caused me to be so tense. Maybe it was my lack of experience suddenly manifesting itself. Well, whatever it was, my first driving lesson couldn’t have started any worse. So that was it for driving lesson number one. I failed it. After all, they don’t just hand out driver’s licenses for opening a door and getting in the car. In any driving lesson, to the best of my knowledge, you have to actually drive or at the very least get the car to move a couple of millimeters in terms of distance in order to be considered for a pass grade. I couldn’t even accomplish that. It was ugly. Driving lessons are apparently not for me. I think it was a full five years after that first disastrous driving lesson that I mustered up the courage to enroll in an adult driving course. I was fortunately the youngest. But that too was little consolation as the only other people in the room were immigrants or country yokels, both of who had never ever seen a car in the first place! Who would have ever thought that a driving lessons could be so difficult. Oh well, my fault. Morgan Hamilton offers his findings and insights regarding the world of teenagers. Cell Phone Cameras

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jakob_Jelling]Jakob Jelling A lot of myths exist regarding as to whether the cell phone cameras are any good or not. The fact that people require to admit that these cameras are also digital cameras and they exhibit the same facilities irrespective of the fact that their sizes are much smaller and their functionalities are curtailed due to this particular reason. Hence some introspection needs to be done regarding the digital cameras and cell phones in their joint venture together in the technological world! Looking back into the initial stages of development the availability of low-cost, low-power CMOS imaging modules helped to charge up the popular craze camera enabled cell phones in today’s world that primitively began in Japan. That proved to be contagious for the rest of the world. From young students to even busy business people avidly annals photos of colleagues and whatever else passes in front of their phones. The popularity has touched sky high and the reason being the good quality that people seek at grass root level endeavors of photography. Americans have the urge to seek betterment in these areas also. They go about to seek cool new digital camera phones that all have VGA resolution 640 x 480 pixels. This is considered a safe bet that this phone is the most expensive model. Much of a kind of ignorance exists apart from all this regarding the cell phones cameras and it crops from the fact that no benchmarks exist for objectively comparing picture quality in image sensors, camera modules, or end products. The helpless consumers thus have to rely upon advertisements to tell them much. Yet this is not a correct way to knowing a technical device. Considering the technological portion it can be said here that in the cell phone cameras some of the VGA handsets offer fairly good image quality. When you consider that the resolution comes from an imaging module that measures only 6 mm square, its actually pretty amazing quality. That square includes an imaging chip, a digital signal processor (DSP) that supports the VGA format, and a double lens that’s packaged in a light-tight module. Finding room for this module is easy. Plus, power consumption is low because the imaging chip is CMOS. Considering the further improvements in the cell phone camera technology it can be stated here that some cell phones have incorporated conventional CCD imaging units that are still used in most digital cameras today. These devices require high voltage and a bigger a battery. As a result, CMOS has taken over in VGA-resolution applications. It provides increasingly good image quality. All this discussion shows the various achievements in the technology. However it must be stated here that the cell phone cameras are really good but they are nothing compared to the actual digital cameras. The sole reason being that they are much larger and contain far more features. It must be admitted here that such comparison is irrelevant because they are definitely two separate areas of work in spite of the fact that they are both digital cameras. Yet they are diverse in 100% of all their aspects. Hence the comparison is irrelevant. Considering all the important points discussed in the above lines regarding the various areas of the cell phone digital cameras it comes out to be something that is worth appreciation. Leaving aside all comparisons they cell phone cameras are digital cameras that are certainly good in their areas of applications and mass acceptance and popularity would some day make them as advanced as their pioneer professional digital cameras. You Can Apply For a Personal Loan Online Even If You Have a Bad Credit Rating

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Terje_Ellingsen]Terje Ellingsen Some people don’t dare to apply for a personal loan online because the have a bad credit rating. They automatically think that if they have bad credit, they can never get a loan. Fortunately this isn’t true. However, with bad credit you will most likely have to pay a higher interest rate accept that you in some cases and from some credit companies you might not be approved for the entire amount you were looking for, but at least still be able to get something. So, if you have a bad credit history you can have a personal loan and you can even use this loan to help increase your credit score. The way to do this is make sure that all of your payments are on time pay a little more than required each month, if you can do so. This also means that the total cost of your loan will decrease because you’ll pay off the loan faster, thus paying less interests. Other things you can do to increase your credit rate Allocate some time where you can sit down undisturbed and do the following: Write down all your sources of income Write down all your expenses like power, rent, mortgage payment, gas bills, dining out, other regular bills etc. - everything you are using your income to pay for. Then, go through the list of your expenses and see what you can cut out in order to make your payments on time and even pay a little more each month. If you are able to it put a part of the excess money (when you have paid your loan on time and added a little more to your regular payments) in a savings account. It is easy to apply for your personal loan on the internet. Just be aware that since the internet is a huge marketplace there are some not so good loan companies out there, so keep to recommended loan or credit companies with a great reputation. Learn How To Manage Your Roulette Bets For Greater Profits!

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Stephen_Todd]Stephen Todd Many players seek to increase their chances of winning at roulette by using roulette systems, but there are two reasons why they dont work. Roulette Is Random Game Of Chance The house always has an advantage because roulette is a game of chance. Roulette systems will not be able to achieve anything over the longer term that can cancel it out. The casinos are smart and even put rules in place to prevent you getting an edge. Lets look at an example: The House Advantage Money management and roulette systems cannot affect the house advantage on any bet, nor guarantee that you will win more money. The house has an advantage before you apply a system and has that same advantage after you apply it. The house edge does not change. The house always has an advantage; you cannot change it, or manage it. Roulette Money Management The Martingale system is a money management system, (and is the most popular in online roulette), in which the dollar values of bets continually increase after losses, until you win. The Martingale system is a simple system and looks in many ways very logical. It is based on the probability that losing an infinite number of times in a row is not possible. Usually applied to ‘even money’ bets, it says that you should double up after each losing bet until you win. However, casinos are wise to this and impose table limits that are described below. That aside, lets look first at how the Martingale system works, and its flaws. Lets use even-money bets. Now lets look at an example of the Martingale system in operation with a $5 bet and $500 table limit. You bet $10. You bet $20. You bet $40. You bet $80. You bet $160. You bet $320. You bet $640; Sorry you have exceeded your table limit game over! The Flaws and Drawbacks of the Martingale System are Obvious: Each Spin Is Random Event. The martingale system works on the premise that you must win eventually, and this is correct, (assuming an infinite number of events!), but a losing or winning streak cannot be determined in advance. If you had a large bankroll and could carry on forever you would of course probably win at some point, but casinos are wise to this and take action. Table Limits All casinos have minimum and maximum table limit to prevent ongoing doubled up consecutive bets. In the above example it was min $10 max $500, which allows only six bets of this kind, and six or more losses in succession are not uncommon. Once the table limit is hit, the use of the Martingale system is over and your money is lost. Casinos are not stupid, they play with the odds in their favour and table limits ensure this. The fact is that with table limits and the system’s reliance on luck, the Martingale system is not really a viable money management system at all. What Can Be Done To Cut The House Edge and Make Profits? Roulette systems for money management are common and none of them work. However, you can take simple steps to ensure your money lasts longer and that give you greater chance of winning. These include placing bets with low odds, (betting red or black means you will win for example 45% of the time), and there are bets with even greater odds of success. You also need to play the right wheel with the right rules. Trade Show Choices: 5 Reasons to Increase Your Booth Space?

By Bob Albright For many who are relatively new the the trade show marketing experience there is trepidation in up sizing your floor space beyond the standard 10′ booth you originally purchased and that has worked so well for you to this point. Below are 5 reasons why that seeming gamble could pay off for you in a big way. #1 — More booth space - More Visibility - Keep in mind why you are at the show in the first place which would be to get noticed. The best way to get more notice is to increase the area you command on the show floor. You don’t have to purchase a new booth. You can add simple rollable banner stands to your show space to help with the increased space and getting your ideas out there. #2 — More people in your booth to sell - A standard 8 foot deep and 10 foot wide booth space can become quite crowded very quickly with just a couple of sales reps helping potential customers. As booth space increases more space is available for more reps to help more customers and yet remain comfortable in the area available. #3 — Better positioning on the show floor - As your booth space increases and you pay more to the show host, you are put in a better position on the show floor related to traffic, competition and customer convenience. #4 — Better handling of customer flow in your booth - In a standard 10 foot booth space there is no real customer flow because there is no room for it. As your booth space gets larger there is room to organize a natural customer flow for the qualification process which leads to the sales process. #5 — Privacy for high potential customers - As your booth space grows room is available for privacy partitions as well as complete office structures that allow for complete privacy away from the hustle and bustle of the show floor. This creates a much more conducive environment for handling those special customers. Once the move has been made to a larger booth space there are rarely reasons to revert back to the original and smaller area. Bob Albright has been designing and selling trade show displays for over 25 years with Midland Displays. All the types of trade show booths that were discussed here can been seen at their website. Home Equity Loans and How to Get the Best One

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Luke_Ashworth]Luke Ashworth A home equity loan is a secured loan that uses your equity in your home as collateral. Home equity loans can be obtained at competitive interest rates and with flexible repayment terms. Many lenders are even willing to extend home equity loans to those with damaged credit; due to the fact these types of loans are less risky for the lender. While your local bank may offer home equity loans, in many cases it is wise to look elsewhere for a home equity loan. Seek out companies that are dedicated solely to providing loans. By doing so, you increase your chances of getting better rates and better terms. Shop around, not only for different types of lenders, but also for different types of loans. Take a look at loans with both fixed and variable interest rates. In most cases, a fixed rate loan is best, saving you from being at the mercy of fluctuating interest rates. However, there is no harm in looking at variable interest rate loans as well, just in case you find a variable interest rate loan that fits your particular needs better than a comparable fixed-rate loan. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. There may be a temptation to take out a loan in a larger than necessary amount. Though you may be able to think of many things you could do with the extra money, you have to keep in mind that you are required to repay the money you borrow. Borrowing a huge amount may make it difficult for you to repay your loan and may lead to you losing your home and severely damaging your credit. Instead, go for a loan in an amount you can repay without a struggle. How to Get the Best Home Equity Loan Wondering how to get the best home equity loan? Like with so many things, the secret to getting the best deal lies in taking the time to research and compare. Obtain loan quotes from several different types of lenders to ensure you find the loan with the lowest possible rate and the best repayment terms. Don’t stop at just comparing quotes, however. Ask plenty of questions. Speak to the lenders you contact for quotes and ask for a detailed explanation of the loan plans they offer. If there’s something you don’t understand, ask for an explanation. Though you may feel that you have enough information about interest rates and monthly payments to make a decision, it is best to make certain you know the details of the loan you are considering inside and out. Making a decision too quickly can cause you to overlook important information, ending with you paying more for your loan than is necessary. Go ahead and negotiate. If you feel you may be able to get a better loan deal, let the lenders and brokers you are dealing with know you have other offers. Request lower interest rates and better terms from each lender and let them compete for your business. This type of negotiation just may assist you in getting a better loan deal. Above all, read all the paperwork you receive carefully before you sign it. After you’ve read it once, read it again. Don’t overlook the fine print. Reading through all the paperwork carefully can save you tons of money and years of headaches. If the documents contain mistakes or are not what you expected, do not sign. Contact the lender to negotiate changes or take your business elsewhere.
