Asthma - Definition, Cause and Triggering Factors

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell] Michael Russell What is it and who gets it? Asthma is a condition whereby the smaller airways of the lungs constrict (or narrow) from time to time, causing typical symptoms. The duration and extent of narrowing vary and they determine the degree of severity of the disease. Asthma affects people of all ages, however, it tends to starts in childhood and runs in family. Having said that, certain asthma sufferers have no family members who have asthma. What are the symptoms of asthma? Typical symptoms are a cough, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. The severity of asthma can usually be classified according to the degree of symptoms. Each episode of symptoms may last from a hour to several days if left untreated. Death is a known but uncommon cause of severe untreated asthma. Symptoms of mild asthma: Episodes of symptoms only during exercise or triggered by a chest or an upper respiratory infection. You are usually symptom- free between episodes. Symptoms of moderate asthma: You display symptoms from time to time. Symptoms tend to be worst at night and early in the morning. You may be awakened at night with a tight chest and coughing. Symptoms of severe asthma: You have symptoms on most days. You may find it hard to talk. Frequent hospitalization for asthma is also one of the criteria for severe asthma. What causes asthma? Asthma occurs as a result of inflammation in the lower, smaller airways. No one is entirely sure why the inflammation occurs. As a consequence of the inflammation, the sensitive airway constricts, making it hard for air to get in and out of the lungs. This leads to symptoms like wheezing, breathless, chest tightness and a cough. Not only that, the inflammation also stimulates the airway to pump out extra mucus, which causes the airway to obstruct further. What are the exacerbating factors of asthma or what can make it worse? Asthma symptoms may be triggered by certain factors. Occasionally, we do not know why it becomes worse. It is possible to avoid certain triggers to help to reduce symptoms. Identifiable triggers include: Exercise. Exercise is a known trigger for asthma. Having said that, you should not refrain yourself from doing sports and exercises. They are actually good for your asthma. It is possible to prevent asthma symptoms while exercising by using an inhaler before you exercise. Pollen and moulds. This is particular evident during season of hay fever. Infection. Viral respiratory tract infections like flu or common cold are common triggers. Smoking and air pollution. Some medicine. Certain medicines are known to constrict smaller airways in the lungs, they include aspirin, beta-blockers and some eye drops for glaucoma. House dust mites. Some food. We do not know why certain food can bring up symptoms of asthma. Food like nuts, eggs and fish can sometimes trigger off an asthma attack in people who have known asthma. However, this is not a common trigger. Emotion. Asthma has nothing to do with your ‘nerve’. However, certain emotions like stress, laughing, anxiety can all cause symptoms of asthma. Top 5 Mistakes To Avoid When Getting Used Car Auto Loans

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jim_Johnson]Jim Johnson Doing your homework before buying a used car can save you an incredible amount of money, especially since cars are one of the most expensive consumer items anyway. But many are not as well prepared as they should be when they get used car auto loans. For some reason, buyers seem to often let their guard down when it comes time to finance the car that they want, and here is where you can lose more money than almost anywhere else in the deal. So here are the top 5 mistakes that you want to avoid when getting used car auto loans: Mistake #1. Not knowing what your credit score is - Before you even begin shopping for your car, get a copy of your credit report and go over it very carefully. Your credit score will determine to a very large degree how much interest you will have to pay on your car loan. Unfortunately, it’s common to find errors in your credit report that do not work in your favor, so keep up to date on your credit report and get all errors removed immediately to get your best finance deals. Mistake #2. Not getting auto financing in advance - Once you have your credit score and know what kind of interest rate you can qualify for, shop around and line up used car auto loan financing before you visit the dealer or go shopping at all. You may want to visit your local bank that you do business with, or even your credit union as they tend to offer very good loan rates to their members. But don’t forget using the internet to get auto loan approval too. Many of the loan sites on the web are able to give you credit authorization within the same day so it’s quick and easy, and often saves money since you are dealing directly with the lender. Once you have advance financing in place you are now in position to bargain with the dealer on financing instead of just blindly accepting what they offer. Mistake #3. Allowing the dealer to obscure details of the car deal - Car dealers often want to mix up the numbers from all segments of the deal so it becomes confusing and hard to pin down exactly what kind of deal you are getting. Do not let them separate out the three distinct parts of most car deals, (1) the actual cost of the car being bought, (2) the actual amount being allowed for trade-in, and (3) the details of the finance contract if you decide to finance the car through them. Don’t let them get you focused on your monthly payment early in the buying process. Keep financing totally separate until the end and watch everything carefully. Mistake #4. Not going over the finance contract carefully before signing - If you decide to finance through the dealer it’s usually the last step in the process and it’s easy to be tired by this point and just want to get things over. But actually you need to be even more vigilant and review the loan contract thoroughly to be sure that you are getting the finance arrangements that you have bargained for and that no additional items were inserted into the deal that you did not already approve. Mistake #5. Going ahead with a financing deal even when you feel uncomfortable - If you ever start to feel uncomfortable with any part of the sales or financing part of buying your car, just walk away right then. Don’t let yourself be pressured into doing anything that you don’t feel totally comfortable with. Many consumers have been hounded into buying a car that they later regretted because of not heeding this advice. When getting used car loans, if you avoid the mistakes listed above you will be able to go a long way toward making sure that you get the right loan at the right price. 10 Best Chinese Herbs

By Reynaldo Escobar Chinese herbs have been awarded a separate category of medicine for good reason. There is a huge number of Chinese herbs, the curative powers of which range from strengthening the immune system to inhibiting the growth of tumors to increasing sexuality. There are many Chinese herbs including some that are considered common and some that are secrets zealously guarded by traditional Chinese herbalists. The following is a list of the 10 Best Chinese herbs: 1. Ginseng: Ginseng is a common root that enhances healing and rejuvenation. It helps to replenish body fluids and depleted energy. Ginseng also helps to remove toxins from the body and also stimulates sex glands. It is mildly bitter sweet to the taste. 2. Black & Red Reishi Mushrooms: These herbs are prized by the Chinese for helping to strengthen the immune system, enhance the impact of antioxidants, increase white blood corpuscle vitality and have an overall calming effect on the body. Reishi mushrooms have also been known to help reduce insomnia and female sexual dysfunction. 3. Lotus seed: The Lotus seed is another invaluable Chinese herb that tones the spleen and kidney and helps ease diarrhea. Lotus seeds also help to stimulate appetite and have a taste that is sweet to neutral. 4. Licorice root: The Licorice root is another well recognized Chinese herb because of its detoxification powers. It invigorates and cools down the body at the same time. Another use is as a natural sweetener. 5. Ginko Biloba: The Ginko Biloba is arguably the most ancient medicine of all Chinese herbs. It has time-tested curative effects on the lungs and the heart. It also fights coughs, asthma and chronic inflammation from allergies. It is also among the best herbal nutritional supplements around. 6. Free and Low Cost PC Offers - The Catch

By Richard Chapo You’ve probably seen the ads for “low cost” PC’s - “PC’s for $199″ - or even “free” computers. If you’re in the market for a personal computer, you should know “free” doesn’t always mean free. Very often, certain conditions and restrictions found in the fine print of advertisements for “free” or “low cost” PC’s can turn a so-called deal into an expensive purchase. Bundled Services “Free” or “low-cost” PC offers often require “bundled” Internet service contracts, which may last up to three years. In return for signing up for Internet service, you can get as much as a $400 rebate on the computer purchase. While some of these offers can be good deals, many are not as affordable as they may seem. Frequently, important details about the rebate and Internet service offer are difficult to ferret out because they’re left out of the advertising or buried in the fine print. Up-Front Costs To get a “low cost” PC, you may have to pay the full cost of the computer up front - that is, the total price without any rebates. If the PC is advertised for $199 after rebates, you may have to pay $599, plus any sales tax and shipping charges, and then send for the $400 rebate. Usually, you have to apply for the rebate in writing, mail in documentation of the sale and then wait - sometimes months - until you receive your rebate check. Sometimes “instant” rebates are offered and you can get your deduction immediately. But some offers allow you to spend the rebate only on other merchandise from the manufacturer or retailer, meaning you still have to pay the full price for the computer. Internet Access When you buy a “free” or “low cost” computer, you often have to sign up for three years of Internet service at $20-$30 a month - a total cost of up to $1,000 for three years. Technology is changing at a dizzying pace. It’s possible that the three-year Internet service you lock in today could be out of date in six months or a year. And if you’d like to cancel your service, you’ll likely have to pay a substantial penalty. If you decide to cancel your Internet service for any reason, chances are you’ll have to pay back some or all of the rebate you received; you also may have to pay a cancellation fee of $50 or more. If you don’t live in a major metropolitan area, you may have to pay long distance telephone charges to access the Internet. Or you also may be able to use a “toll-free” (800, 888 or 877) number supplied by the Internet Service Provider (ISP), but you may be charged five or six dollars an hour to use their “toll-free” number. Whether you choose to use the ISP’s telephone number or pay long-distance charges, your phone calls to access the Internet could add up to more than you’ll save through the rebate. If the PC offer requires you to sign-up for Internet service, ask the retailer and the ISP for the Internet access phone numbers closest to you. Then check with your local phone company to determine whether you have to pay long distance rates to use those phone numbers. You may want to consider another offer if the “deal” you’re considering requires you to call long distance or pay a fee to access the Internet. Other Costs It’s possible that the cost of a monitor or other crucial system components may not be included in the PC offer you’re considering. The advertisements for the offer may not be clear about what’s included. If you have to buy a monitor, for example, plan on spending at least an additional $150. When considering a “free” or “low cost” PC offer, ask the retailer about up-front costs, rebates, essential components, Internet access costs, long-term commitments, cancellation policies, local or long distance phone access and any other important issues. Details will help you determine if you can afford the free PC. Lose Weight Fast A Natural Appetite Suppressant Thats Good For You

By Sacha Tarkovsky If you want to lose weight fast there is a natural appetite suppressant that is proven to work and is good for you in that it also improves mood, attention and memory. If you have not guessed what it is then the answer may well come as a surprise to you. Its nicotine and in organic form (outside of cigarettes) which is found as a trace element in many common foods such as: Potatoes, tomatoes, chili’s and tea to name a few. Its not only found in organic form as part of the natural food chain, but if you take enough of it, it can actually do you good. Lets first look at its role in suppressing appetite and how it can help you lose weight fast. Nicotine as an appetite suppressant It is a medically proven fact that nicotine has an affect on the signals in the brain that can trigger hunger pangs. For example, a large number of smokers when they stop smoking over eat and put on weight. Nicotine without the smoke If you want to curb your appetite and lose weight fast you can get nicotine in organic form. A number of companies are looking at producing nicotine supplements that allow users to get nicotine without smoking. The first one is already on the market. Medical research Nicotine is an appetite suppressant and this has seen major research into it helping treat obesity and a number of other conditions, as nicotine does not just suppress appetite it makes us feel better. Nicotine is known to help improve mood, concentration and memory, as nicotine switches on the receptors on the surface of cells in parts of the brain, causing neurons to release the chemical dopamine, which is associated with feelings of pleasure. First product Nicotine in water has already appeared on the market. Originally aimed at smokers who couldnt or dont wish to smoke, it is now being taken by people to help with dieting and for its possible health benefits. Water is the ideal delivery method for dieters as water is an appetite suppressant in its own right. Water keeps your stomach full and stops dehydration which can lead to hunger pangs. “Hunger signals”, in a large majority of cases are simply thirst signals” Water also helps the body metabolize stored fat by providing a boost to the kidneys, helping them flush out waste. Nicotine and water are therefore the perfect combination to help anyone on a diet. Nicotine removed from cigarettes and consumed in its natural organic form not only curbs appetite, it can also make you feel better, it also improves concentration and memory. You may not have thought of nicotine as a diet aid but its well worth considering. Acquiring Research Knowledge

By Sharon White So how is research knowledge really acquired in education? Research knowledge is disseminated through three kinds of sources: primary sources (those used by investigators when they share research knowledge with colleagues in their fields); secondary sources (which provide reports of research knowledge for potential users); and tertiary sources (which interpret research knowledge for the general public). Research reports in primary sources are written by investigators, are subject to peer review, provide details about methodology and findings, and are often rife with jargon. Those in secondary sources may be written by content specialists, feature clearer writing, and typically provide only a few details about study methods. Those in tertiary sources are often prepared by advocates, propagandists, columnists, or journalists. Writing in tertiary sources usually provides few or no details about studies and may project a distorted view of research knowledge tailored to make headlines or to support the authors’ ideological viewpoints. In the United States, the most widely read journals were Educational Leadership, Phi Delta Kappan, Education Week, Education Digest, Catholic School Teacher, and Momentum. All six of these journals were secondary sources. In addition, many of the professional books were works that packaged research knowledge for users. Such packaging was also common in the university courses the principals had taken and in the bulk of professional meetings and workshops they had attended. Because the typical principal is exposed to many sources of research knowledge and because most of those sources provide only secondary accounts of knowledge, we might expect him or her to be a generalist when it comes to research knowledge which is to know about many examples of research knowledge but have only superficial understanding of most of these examples. Don’t Avoid Conflict and Confrontation with Your Spouse

By Kathy J. Marshack, Ph.D., P.S. “I just let him handle things his way.” “Were not very good at resolving problems, so I let it go.” “I just hate confrontation!” Listening, talking, communicating, resolving problems, making joint decisions… these are requirements for all couples. Without good communication skills and quality time dedicated to communicating, relationships soon flounder and fail, especially among couples with the stress of two careers and a full family life. Many couples dont talk because they are avoiding conflict and confrontation. There is a common misconception that conflict and confrontation are bad. One of the major reasons couples have problems is their failure to confront issues head-on. They may fight openly or quietly seethe, but they have a terrible time confronting the real conflict respectfully and honestly. Its as if confrontation and conflict are impolite. However, conflict and confrontation are natural and healthy components of any relationship. You are neither bad nor wrong for causing a conflict or identifying one. Conflict is an opportunity to open up communication on a difficult subject. Do not fear conflict and confrontation. Avoiding conflict is not the goal. Rather you want to develop the tools to “lean into” conflicts and resolve them early on, so that you can reorganize your lives to include the new learning. Because married couples have a lot at stake when it comes to their relationship, they are prone to avoid conflict or to use ineffective tools to solve the conflict too quickly. Compromising and acquiescing are two of these ineffective tools. Most couples are shocked when I advise them to avoid compromises at all costs. After all, isnt compromise a requirement of partnership? The reality is that decisions that are arrived at through compromise usually lack creativity and seldom last. Sure, a compromise now and then may be necessary for the sake of expediency, but if a decision is important, a compromise may cause anger and resistance. Because compromises are usually a result of both people giving up something in order to get an agreement, the decision is a watered-down version of two stronger opinions. Compromise is the easy way out when you are trying to avoid conflict and confrontation. It appears that the compromise will smooth ruffled feathers and that both partners can go away happy. What really happens, however, is that each partner leaves feeling as though they have been had. One person may resent having to compromise and will be looking for ammunition to prove that the decision was a bad one. Another person may feel he or she has done the honorable thing by not pushing his or her opinion on the other, only to feel unappreciated later when the compromise plan is dropped. If you stop and think about it, how long have your compromise decisions really lasted? Acquiescing or forcing your opinion upon your partner are other ways of avoiding conflict. In seeking to avoid conflict, for example, a persuasive person may push his or her partner to acquiesce to a certain point of view, but this does not mean that the partner agrees. It may mean only that the partner actually does not want to fight and so appears to agree, when he or she has only given in. Dont make the mistake of pushing to win at all costs or to acquiescing to the persuader, when you dont agree. In either case, if you are the persuader or the acquiescent partner, the conflict has not been resolved and, whats worse, may have been driven underground. If you dont make time to talk, if you dont consider nurturing your personal relationship as important, and if you avoid healthy conflict and confrontation, your relationship will disintegrate. So take the time now to evaluate your communication skills. Invest in the time to develop a meaningful, loving relationship with your spouse. Copyright 2000 Kathy J. Marshack, Ph.D., P.S. Online Dating Made Easy and Safe

By Jeff Lakie As technology becomes more ingrained in our everyday lives, more people are turning to the Internet for social purposes. And over the past few years, this has become a more accepted form of communication. Friendships are formed and relationships made online. But just how much trouble is it to join the online dating sites? And is it safe? A few years ago, there was significant attention placed on those who turned to online dating. Consumers were warned that the sites were unsafe, used by predators who were looking for victims. But increased attention to security and awareness on the part of those using the services has made an incredible difference. Many of the dating sites are now offering members ways to talk anonymously at first, then allowed to meet via web cam in private chat rooms. With the web cam options, it’s more difficult to hide things like age. Some sites also screen members personally. While the sites make no claims that they’ve gone so far as to perform background checks, they do often verify addresses and other information. Again, this isn’t a full-fledged safety net, just one more precaution toward making online dating safer. As more people are becoming completely comfortable with online communication and more people have access to Internet at home and at work, online dating sites have flourished. There are many sites that have very short sign-up processes and others that require you to answer lots of questions. You’ll typically be allowed to register for free, though you have to pay dues in order to gain access to other members’ contact information. This is how the sites are able to boast that they have thousands of profiles available. Since it’s free to sign up and post your information and photo, many people take that step with no intentions of going further. If you’re considering joining an online dating service, check out the membership requirements first. If security is important, take time to read what steps the dating service has taken to ensure the safety of its members. Above all, take time to protect yourself. Remember that not everyone is honest. Just as you could meet a person on a park bench that offers lies about his or her life, you’ll meet some people at online dating sites that are also untruthful. But you may also meet the love you’ve been looking for. Marketing Apathy Solutions: 10 Solutions for Overcoming Apathy Beginning Today

By Alicia Smith Are you suffering from feelings of indifference or a lack of concern when it comes to marketing your business? Do you lack the passion thats necessary to attract customers to your business? Marketing apathy, characterized by feelings of passiveness, disregard, and a lack of interest is widespread among todays businesses. This attitude is like putting a roadblock between you and your success. Fortunately, there are a number of solutions for overcoming apathy that you can start implementing today. Try one or more of these. 1. Do something. The best way to take a blah attitude and turn it around is to do something. You may have heard the phrase, an idle mind is the devils workshop. The same goes for your business. Apathy often disguises itself as procrastination lack of action. In the case of your business, an idle business can mean financial disaster. When you find yourself not wanting to do anything, do something. Pick up a book and read for a while, call a client or two and ask them how things are going, or contact your coach to get yourself moving. If you have to, get up and do jumping jacks or take a walk around the block. When you engage your physical body, its usually easier to engage the rest of you. Once you get the energy moving on your end, youll be able to take it and channel it into a number of avenues that can lead to business success. 2. Gather your support team. A support team is critical to our personal and professional well-being. A support team can consist of our friends, business colleagues, family members, a loving partner or spouse, or even groups that we belong to like business or civic groups. When we experience rough days in our business we can call on these folks for uplifting conversation, brainstorming, or just to share a friendly hello. Our support team can mean all the difference in the attitude we have in our business. Not only will you benefit from the interchange, youll give your support members the opportunity to share their gifts with you. Everyone wins. 3. Obtain more education. Often indifference about our business can find its roots in a lack of knowledge. Youve probably heard the phrase Knowledge is power. Seeking out new knowledge, whether by reading a book, taking a teleclass, or enrolling in a workshop can be a wonderful solution to curing feelings of apathy. Seeking more education can introduce us to new people and ideas, which will often be just what is needed to get our creative juices flowing. 4. Craft a clear vision. Having a clear vision of your business purpose and mission can be critical to your business success. A vision, designed exclusively by you, provides a roadmap to help you move from where you are today to where you want to be tomorrow. When you dont have a clear vision about why you are in business and what purpose you are serving, its easy to go in the wrong direction. Craft a written vision of your business. It will help you stay focused and on track. 5. Read a variety of periodicals. Probably one of the best solutions to marketing apathy is to read and one suggestion is to read a variety of periodicals. Take a trip to your local bookstore. Visit the areas you most enjoy. Peruse cookbooks, business books, or spiritual books anything that catches your interest. Dont forget to visit the magazine racks, which include hundreds of publications on almost every topic imaginable. You dont necessarily need to be reading books and magazines about marketing to get ideas about new things to do with your business. Look at what other companies are doing to communicate about their products and services. You might find a creative way to adapt something to your own business. One of my favorite things to do is pick up a magazine on a topic I know nothing about and turn to the back where the smaller classified ads are listed. Its amazing how many ideas Ive been able to adapt from an industry totally unrelated to mine. 6. Hang out with new people. Look at your Rolodex or database. Do you socialize with the same kinds of people all the time? How about joining a new group - maybe one that isnt related to your business - and start meeting some new people? You may be surprised when something said would open your eyes to a new idea you can implement in your business. Better yet, youll be expanding your network and increasing your opportunities to introduce others to you and your business. 7. Take failures and turn them into successes. Everyone has experienced a failure in their marketing or in their business. But, how you choose to look at it can mean all the difference in your attitude and determines whether you are going to remain stuck or move forward. Think of a few failures youve had in the past year. How can you reframe those into positive experiences? What did you learn from those experiences that helped you to avoid further issues? Did those experiences create opportunities for you? In many cases, youll probably be able to see the good in the bad. Whenever you start feeling down about your business marketing, stop your thoughts in their tracks and ask, Where is the good in all of this? 8. Focus on the few. Sometimes we find feelings of listlessness and lethargy creeping into our marketing efforts, usually because were overwhelmed with all we have to do. We dont know where to start, we feel pressured to perform and to get something out there to attract clients, but we dont know which direction to take or which marketing technique to select. The solution to overwhelm, and the accompanying feelings of apathy, is to get focused. Select one or two marketing techniques that you feel comfortable and competent with implementing. Test them and see if you get the results you want. If you dont, then youll have great feedback to try a new way. Dont try to do everything, otherwise youll find yourself in a state of overwhelm, and doing nothing. 9. Create alliances with others. Isolation can create environments where we lack motivation and enthusiasm. And, when were trying to market our businesses, we definitely need these two ingredients! When we work with others, we can move ahead a lot more quickly and, usually, with more ease. Who can you create a partnership or alliance with? Perhaps there is a person in a competing or complimentary discipline with whom you can partner with to create a workshop, e-book, or even a teleclass. Their enthusiasm will motivate you; and your enthusiasm will motivate them. Share your talents and ideas. You never know what kind of success you can create together. 10. Recognize the value in you. Apathy can often find its roots in the attitudes we carry around about ourselves. And, the sad truth is that these often are completely false. As an aspiring entrepreneur, learn to recognize the value in you. Who you are and what you have to offer holds great value. Your gifts, talents, and your unique way of looking at the world are just what your clients are looking for! Copyright 2004 Alicia Smith Consulting & Training. All Rights Reserved.
